Africa is an extremely diverse continent and that diversity also extends to its weather. That means that for Americans, your typical summer vacation months may not be the best time to visit certain African countries. For instance, South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere, and its winter, from June to August, is characterized by cool to cold temperatures. Similarly, those months are during rainy season in much of West Africa, which sometimes is characterized by heavy, frequent rain and high humidity in southern, coastal areas. In Egypt, the heat in June, July and August is extreme, sometimes exceeding 100°F. By contrast, some island nations and other countries in Southern and East Africa have perfect weather during that time. Here are 5 African countries for you to consider for your summer vacation.

Cape Verde

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation, Cape Verde is a great option with 9 inhabited islands to choose from. Cape Verde in May, June and July offers warm, sunny, and dry weather, averaging 79°F–86°F (26°C–30°C), with low humidity. The waters are calm and warm, ideal for beach holidays. It’s also the start of low season, which means it’s less expensive with less visitors. While July is technically the beginning of the rainy season, in reality it’s occasional short showers rather than prolonged, heavy rain.

Kenya

Late June to September is the best time to visit Kenya, as it falls in the dry season and coincides with the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. Temperatures are comfortable, with bright sunny days and chilly nights and early mornings. Expect average highs of 70°F-80°F (21°C–27°C) and lows of 50°F-54°F (10°C–12°C).

Rwanda

One of the best times to visit Rwanda is during its dry season, from mid-May to September. With minimal rainfall, it’s ideal for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing. September is especially popular for Kwita Izina, the annual gorilla naming ceremony. Average daily high temperatures range from 75°F to 80°F (24°C–27°C), with overnight lows between 53°F and 57°F (12°C–14°C).

Mauritius

The best time to visit Mauritius is during its winter months, from May to September, which offers sunny, dry, and cool weather ideal for beach activities, hiking, and surfing. It’s also peak time for dolphin and whale watching. Daytime temperatures average 70°F-80°F (21°C–27°C).

Namibia

The best time to visit Namibia is from May to September, during the dry season. Days are sunny, with temperatures around 68°F-77°F (20°C–25°C), but nights can drop to freezing in the desert. This time is perfect for hiking, wildlife viewing and safaris, and outdoor desert activities. July and August are very popular, so accommodations should be booked well in advance.
